Sophie Min Orchestra
Sophie Min Orchestra showcases a wide range of contemporary jazz arranging techniques including western classical music, story-telling driven music writing, minimalism, twelve-tone theory, mixed meters, Latin-American music and Korean influences. Sophie discovers the link between the improvised composing on piano and the imaginative cascade for storytelling practice in her compositions. Together, Sophie creates a compositional parade of the ‘jazz orchestra’ idiom with lush harmony, dynamic continuum and spoton improvisational fun. SMO released a debut album in May 2020.
The stella lineup of musicians include: Shannon Marshall on flugelhorn/trumpet, Martin Kay on flute/soprano sax/clarinet/tenor sax, Harry Ottley on flute/clarinet/alto sax, Joel Aspinal on tenor sax, Sacha Kloostra on drums, Zac Sakrewski on acoustic & electric bass/effects, Sophie Min on piano/composition, Flora Wong on violin 1, Irene Spina on violin 2, Julianna Kim on viola and Julian Sharp on cello.
SHAMIN are an experimental jazz duo, comprised of Sophie Min and Benjamin Shannon. SHAMIN released their debut album ‘Fine Gnaw’ in April 2018. The group explores original composition, unconventional rhythm and timbre drawing influence from Matt Mitchell, David Binney, Mark Guiliana and Tyshawn Sorey. The virtuosity and groove scatter of their personal compositions guides to textured atmosphere and empowering interplay.
